Night Garden
Night Garden is a sculptural installation designed for a marginal urban landscape. This installation is conceived for inclusion in a marsh-like environment similar to the rushes at the fringe of Belvedere lake in Manhattan's Central Park. The tall verticle and long horizontal elements in the sculpture become visual allusions to the reeds that surround the sculpture in that setting. The sculpture is made of steel tubing in a configuration which supports several eight foot fluorescent tubes. The entire structure sits on a supporting framework which remains submerged in the marsh. Changing light conditions alter the appearance of the art work throughout the day. The burnished surface of the sculpture gives a hint of its presence as the viewer catches the reflection of sunlight on its upper parts, highlighting these elements against the natural surroundings. The work comes to life in twilight and early evening hours when light level changes are greatest. Silhouettes of the construction mask the sky and the sculpture fuses into this environment as the light it produces highlights sections of the bio-scape.
