JOAN SCHULZE
These prints are amazing in their fidelity to the original work.
“I thought of each collage as a visual poem relating to Haiku, a written Japanese poetry form which consists of three lines totaling 17 syllables. These collages became my visual haiku.”

The work of Joan Schulze takes on many forms, growing and changing as the impressions and experiences in her life. Her collages are often quilts that grace large public spaces or two-sided paper and silk constructions, illuminated like stained glass. In addition to large public works, she also enjoys creating on a more intimate scale with small visual poems such as her Haiku series, which rely on paper, fabric and alternative photographic processes. Schulze’s love of color, pattern and a fascination for collaged images is evident in all of her work.

Schulze’s work is in many public and private collections most notably in the National Museum of American Art, Renwick Gallery, and Smithsonian, Washington DC. A new book, Art of Joan Schulze, recently released in Europe, is winning rave reviews. This survey of her work illustrates her inventiveness and depth of accomplishments during her thirty-year career. A major one-person exhibition of her quilts, Objects of Desire, is currently traveling in Europe.

Born and raised in Chicago, Schulze now divides her time between her San Francisco studio and her home in Sunnyvale where she has lived, worked and raised a family since 1968.
