CHRISTINE RELTON - TOM MARINE
Christine Relton was born in Cumbria and raised in Yorkshire, England. She eventually gave up teaching English in order to paint full time. Her years of teaching language taught her to appreciate the non-linguistic nature of art. She enjoyed the pure visual qualities of art, and loved the physical nature of creating art.
Relton studied art at Jacob Kramer in Leeds and earned a BA (Honours) degree from Lancaster based on time spent in India. She also lived in Japan and Vietnam, and painted widely throughout Southeast Asia. Since returning to the UK in 1996, Relton has made collaborative representational works with artist Tom Marine, in which they explore similar themes of place and memory. Their works are exhibited widely in gallery spaces and contemporary art fairs.
Tom Marine was born in Hartlepool, England. He studied art at Byam Shaw and the Chelsea College of Art. In additional to exhibiting and selling his art through galleries and fairs, he is also involved in Art in Education and Health. Marine paints in collaboration with Christine Relton on representational works. He has completed many commissions in the health and private sector with Relton and is involved in running workshops with children and various charities. He is also exploring printmaking and has a separate focus in working with text.
The two artists work together on the same canvas, beginning with an idea of a real place or event. Eventually the painting takes on a life of its own, and results in an image that is more a representation of feeling than of a specific place. They consider it finished when the balance feels right and the color works.
