SIMON CLARIDGE

This is an image I have wanted to tackle for such a long time. I wanted to approach it in a similar way to a musical artist covering a famous song. I wanted to make it my own without losing what made the original image so special. The content of the piece has such powerful cultural history; everybody knows the iconic Hollywood scene and the sexual connotations of the wind from the subway grate billowing Marilyn Monroe’s skirt. The concept of leading the viewer but never being explicit has been such a huge influence on my work and I wanted to paint the piece in honour of that. Recreating the subway express wind was tremendous fun that involved tables’ chairs and desk fans! I hope the final image stands up in its own right as a successful ‘cover version’.
