ARTIST INFO

Mike Blatt’s paintings and limited-edition graphics use humor and a sense of play to reenvision America’s most recognized pop culture icons. His latest Betty Boop series captures the sultry innocence of the doe-eyed bombshell, using vivid color to add a fresh edge to an otherwise retro image. He exaggerates the ultra-feminine curves of Betty’s figure, and dresses her in posh ensembles, adding to her ever-present sex
appeal. Blatt’s compositions refer to the paintings of Tamara de Lempicka, the prolific painter whose jewel-toned figurative artworks are most closely associated with the artdeco movement.
Betty Boop was created in 1930 and was based on a real-life Hollywood singer and performer who would never enjoy the level fame experienced by her animated replica.
Since her creation, Betty Boop's image and pop culture status has been reborn countless times in collectible merchandise, television appearances, and now, in the fine art realm.
Mike Blatt’s passion for creating fine art began in his home turf of Brooklyn, New York. He was educated at the Pratt Institute where he studied with Adolph Gottlieb, and later at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, painting under the instruction of Isaac Sawyer.
Blatt’s penchant for pop culture extends to interest in sports and poker. He has worked on campaigns for the San Jose Sharks professional hockey team, and he took part in creating the first art exhibition in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
