FRANCIS TATARA
Francis Tatara was born in 1960 in western Hungary. From an early age, Francis enjoyed drawing as a way to create stories. He recalls studying the neighbors' rooftops, trekking upon cobblestone paths and sketching with a scrutinous eye the slight differences from dwelling to dwelling that to Francis illustrated greater differences. Whether of Hungary or central Texas, his surroundings inspire Francis to pay closer attention to details, especially within the quickly homogenizing world. His fond memories of being read to, and of being seated on the floor staring into the illustrated bookcover grasped by the orator, still suggest to Francis that the spectacle of painting is potent and far from outmoded. Ray Bradbury's science fiction vignettes were some of the first watercolors Francis encountered. "Watercolor has such an ability to create moods of atmosphere, both exotic and familiar, and each completely unique to that moment's circumstances." The vision of Tatara's artwork parallels that of early American plein-air artists who also explored their environments. Like a journalist, Francis enjoys documenting the settings of today's dynamic culture. He illustrates that beauty can be found in the subdued color combinations of a cityscape, as well as in the draftsmanship of forms and places made recognizable. Above all, the work of Francis Tatara suggests change and captures a state of flux that our civilization knows so well.
