Under the direction of project manager, Carol Rensink, the foundation for "Mother Earth Eco-Sculpture" was installed by bulldozer and dump truck at Challenger Park near NASA in south Harris County, Texas, during the months of September through November 1997.

After the heavy equipment operators finished their work, volunteer artists, students, landscapers, probationers and other members of the community completed the job.

Prairie Buffalograss sod, genetically engineered by Texas A&M (Dallas) for increased drought-resistence and low maintenance requirements, was placed and pinned on the sculpture's planes over the course of two days.

Gumbo-like mud and a few fire ants from Dallas, angry perhaps because they were not consulted about the move, had to be overcome.

But Mother Earth Eco-Sculpture looks lovely. We hope to have an opening celebration in the spring, when the grass will be firmly rooted.
