"As a child, I was fascinated with lines and how they are able to transform a blank sheet of paper into an organized formation. Currently, my art uses lines contrasting between one another to create points of interest around a centralized figure. Bold lines and geometric shapes are juxtaposed against the softer and more sensual lines of the female figure. The muted colors along with the contrast of the lines help create a separation of figure and shape. The lines are there to define shapes and lead the eye around the work. The colors and figure personifies an emotion and/or situation that deal with past relationships. I use my work as an outlet to define my emotions, which helps define who I am as an artist."
"The figures I create are derived from photographs, taken by me, of local models that bring to mind memories of the past. Sometimes its a simple gesture, or the way the drapery is placed; many things can spark an idea for a painting. These uncompleted thoughts are sketched onto a wood panel, and then painted using thin layers of oil color. Each glaze of color allows the previous layers to shine through, along with the original drawing, so the viewer can see the entire creative process. The wood panel, sketches, and oil color come together to make the finished piece. The steps that are involved in creating a painting or an work of art, is what intrigues me and drives me as an artist." - J. Bende
