This calligraphic painting is inspired by the "Zen line" or "line of nothingness" called the mujibo. The beauty of a single line, or in this case a pair of single lines is expressed in a brush stroke that is truly alive.
Much of my work might be characterized by pattern, repetition and layering of pencil or brush strokes, color and object abstractions on paper or canvas. At the root of my work is an exploration of the quality of the line, mark and stroke of the pencil or brush. I think of my work as a spiritual practice. I strive to create a brush stroke that is "alive" in much the same way the Zen calligrapher creates a line that is "alive" by focusing the mind.
