"Each painting starts from reference material collected whilst out walking in the landscape. Drawings, notes and photographs all help to inform the work. The majority of work is based on the area in which I live and on nearby coastlines although I have also produced pieces from travels around the UK. I am drawn to expanses of open ground. The interest lies not in the detail, but in the colour and texture of the piece. Time and weather are a vital factor as these both control the dramatic potential of the work. The structure of a painting always comes first. I begin by building up the layers of the landscape. The divisions made by the scenes boundaries provide the definition to the painting."
